METS sector set to RISE with new scale-up program

METS Ignited and NERA Industry Growth Centres, the Queensland and Western Australian Governments, and KPMG Australia last night launched the RISE scale-up accelerator, a new program focusing on Australia's mining and energy resources sectors.

The program builds on the winning formula of the 2017 Igniting METS accelerator pilot - an initiative of METS Ignited and the Queensland Government - with an expanded sector focus and national footprint through collaboration with NERA and the Western Australian Government.

RISE is specifically designed for scale-ups that offer proven solutions to priority challenges facing the resources sector. It aims to assist those seeking to commercialise their products and services in the domestic and international markets.

NERA CEO Miranda Taylor commented: "We are proud to be collaborating with our fellow project partners to expand the RISE program into Australia's energy resources sector. Together our mission is to strengthen Australia's position as a global hub for innovation in mining and energy resources sectors, and through initiatives like RISE, we can enhance the global competitive advantage of Australian industry and support the development of a world-class, innovative supply sector."

METS Ignited Acting CEO Dr Ian Dover said RISE would include a parallel corporate stream, connecting the participants with major operators and potential corporate partners to accelerate their business growth.

"The scale-up accelerator is different to most in that it runs two parallel streams: one for corporate partners and one for SMEs, helping to support industry innovation collaboration," said Dr Dover. "Collaboration is an essential ingredient in fostering growth in the priority sectors the Industry Growth Centres are supporting - the expansion of the program will help to create more opportunities for mining supply companies to connect with more mining customers," he said.

The RISE accelerator will challenge all aspects of its participants' value propositions, business models and strategies - and equip them with the skills and capabilities to develop their innovation, win more work, and grow their businesses.

Ashley Brown, KPMG Australia's Program Director for RISE, said: "RISE has been developed based on all of the learnings from the METS Igniting and Energise accelerators - which have helped companies like Sentient Computing, Vayeron, and Petra Data Science rapidly grow their businesses. We are excited to be working in Australia's resources powerhouses, Western Australia and Queensland, to help the next generation of resources technology companies."

The program was launched by Karen Andrews Federal Member for McPherson and Minister for Industry, Science and Technology via video link at an event in Brisbane last night with a supporting video presentation from The Hon Cameron Dick, Queensland Government Minister for State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning.

A RISE Perth launch is planned for Thursday 29 November.
